چکیده

In uence diagrams have become a popular tool for representing and solving complex decision-making problems under uncertainty. In this paper, we focus on the task of building probability models from expert knowledge, and also on the challenging and less known task of constructing utility models in in uence diagrams. Our goal is to review the state of the art and list some challenges. Similarly to probability models, which are embedded in in uence diagrams as a Bayesian network, preferential/utility independence conditions can be used to factor the joint utility function into small factors and reduce the number of parameters needed to fully de ne the joint function. A number of graphical models have been recently proposed to factor the joint utility function, including the generalized additive independence networks, ceteris paribus networks, utility ceteris paribus networks, expected utility networks, and utility diagrams. Similarly to probability models, utility models can also be engineered from a domain expert or induced from data.

Probability Elicitation in Influence Diagram Modeling by Using Interval Probability

In decision modeling with influence diagrams, the most challenging task is probability elicitation from domain experts. It is usually very difficult for experts to directly assign precise probabilities to chance nodes. In this paper, we propose an approach to elicit probability effectively by using the concept of interval probability (IP). During the elicitation process, a group of experts assi...

An Influence Diagram Approach to One-on-One Air Combat

In this paper, the methodology of influence diagrams (Clemen, 1996; Howard and Matheson, 1984) and game theory are utilized in the modeling of one-on-one air combat. Furthermore, a simulation procedure for solving the combat model approximately is suggested. The influence diagrams representing the pilot's maneuvering decision in a duel between two aircraft have been developed earlier in Virtane...

Rational Choice Theory: A Cultural Reconsideration

Economists have heralded the formulation of the expected utility theorem as a universal method of choice under uncertainty. In their seminal paper, Stigler and Becker (Stigler & Becker, 1977) declared that “human behavior can be explained by a generalized calculus of utility-maximizing behavior” (p.76). The universality of the rational choice theory has been widely criticized by psychologists, ...

Decision making with hybrid influence diagrams using mixtures of truncated exponentials

Mixtures of truncated exponentials (MTE) potentials are an alternative to discretization for representing continuous chance variables in influence diagrams. Also, MTE potentials can be used to approximate utility functions. This paper introduces MTE influence diagrams, which can represent decision problems without restrictions on the relationships between continuous and discrete chance variable...

On Calibration and Application of Logit-Based Stochastic Traffic Assignment Models

There is a growing recognition that discrete choice models are capable of providing a more realistic picture of route choice behavior. In particular, influential factors other than travel time that are found to affect the choice of route trigger the application of random utility models in the route choice literature. This paper focuses on path-based, logit-type stochastic route choice models, i...
